Assess the situation

  • Keep your own safety in mind
  • Call out for help
  • Get an overview of the situation – secure the incident scene if necessary

Touch the person and check if:

  • They are awake (can open their eyes or talk)
  • The airways are clear
  • They are breathing normally
  • They are bleeding profusely
  • They are cold

If unconscious with normal breathing:

  • Monitor breathing for one minute.
  • Then place the person in the recovery position.
  • Call 113 – follow the instructions.
  • Monitor breathing.
  • Keep the person warm.

If the person is lifeless and not breathing normally: Start CPR

  • Call 113 and turn the phone on speaker.
  • Give 30 rapid compressions:
    • Your arms must be straight with your hands on top of each other.
    • Press down in the middle of the chest, between the nipples.
    • Press down at least 5 cm.
    • Then give two rescue breaths.
  • Continue with compressions and rescue breaths until the ambulance arrives.

Use a defibrillator if you have access to one.

Stop the bleeding

  • Press hard on the wound until the bleeding stops.
  • Hold a compress or similar between the wound and your hand.
  • The wound must be elevated above heart Level.
  • Apply a pressure bandage.
  • Keep the person warm.
